Star of the Week: Kara!

Updated: Nov 19, 2020

Happy Friday Gold Star Revolution squad members! As you know, it's time to announce our Star of the Week!

Future Stars of the Week will be chosen from reader nominations!  But since we are at the beginning of this project, I will be the one nominating our Friday Star of the Week until the time when nominations from readers start to roll in.

Please send me your nominations, and please see the end of this post for more details on how to do that!  All recipients of the Star of the Week award who live in the US are eligible to receive a free gift from my Gold Star Award Winner collection** on Zazzle!

This week's Star is one of my oldest and dearest friends! I am thrilled to introduce you to my friend Kara!

Kara and I met when we were assigned to be freshmen roommates in college. If you can believe it, I still have the roommate assignment postcard that the school sent to me!

When my parents and I pulled into the parking lot of my dorm on my first day, I saw Kara carrying some of her belongings into the building, and I immediately KNEW that she was my roommate! I think Kara also claims that she knew that I was her roommate before we actually met. This may be the very first picture that I have of us together:

Let's hear it for that 1980s hair!!!

Kara and I lived together our first two years in college. We parted ways at the end of our sophomore year, and we did not speak to each other at all during our junior year. I believe that we had some sort of argument or disagreement, but I honestly don’t remember that much about it.

I also recall that we did not speak to each for most of our senior year. But then we ran into each other in the library one day, and we reconciled.

I am SO glad that we had that random encounter in the library that day! If we hadn’t, we may never have reconnected, and I would have missed out on so much richness in my life as a result.

Unlike many people, I did not have the greatest college experience, so Kara is the one and only person I keep in touch with from those days. That makes me value her even more!

It feels like Kara has always been there for me, even though we didn’t meet until we were 18 years old. She knows so much about me and my history. She knew my parents. She knows my sister. She understands my serious Catholic upbringing. She was a bridesmaid in my first wedding, and she was one of only 15 guests at my second wedding. It is so comforting to have such a long history with another person, and this is something that I will always treasure.

Kara is SUCH an amazing person! She is incredibly caring and non-judgmental. She is also one of the calmest, level-headed people I have ever met I seriously envy her ability to remain on an even keel.

Kara and I are both from Pennsylvania, but we are now both living in North Carolina a very strange coincidence indeed! Even so, we are still 3 hours apart, which means that we don’t get to see each other all that often.

Kara has had her hands full over the past couple of decades raising three amazing children who possess many of the same wonderful qualities that she does. Her daughters are now in college, and her son is in high school, which means that Kara will be an empty nester in the not-too-distant future. As difficult as I know that will be for her, the selfish part of me hopes that she will then be able to spend more time with me!

But even if we can't see each other that much going forward, I absolutely know that Kara is in my corner! I would definitely call her if something big happened in my life and I needed support. Kara and I can automatically pick up where we left off, no matter how long we go in between visits or phone calls. I feel 100% comfortable with her, and I would never hesitate to tell her anything. We have a deep connection that will continue to stand the test of time.

I love Kara more than I can say, and I am honored to present her with the Star of the Week award! Congratulations my beautiful friend!

It's time for a couple more photos of our Star! Here are a few of us throughout the years:
